Dubrovnik - Fort Lovrijenac

Dubrovnik - Fort Lovrijenac

Fort Lovrijenac, also known as St. Lawrence Fortress, is not only a fortress but also a theater located outside the western wall of Dubrovnik. Its theater is the site of one of the most beautiful stages for some of the world's best plays. As a fortress, it played an important role in defending the city against Venetian rule. Because of its position as the city's prime defensive structure, it has also been called Dubrovnik's Gibraltar. Fort Lovrijenac, which stands 37 meters above the Adriatic sea, is shaped in a perfect triangle conforming to the massive rock formation on which it sits. The fort can be reached by climbing 175 steps to the top of the hill.
