The Gothic Wawel Castle was built at the behest of Casimir III the Great, who reigned from 1333 to 1370, and consists of a number of structures situated around the central courtyard. The imposing structure stands on a fortified hill on the banks of the Vistula river. The castle serves as a romantic reminder of the country’s rich heritage and is a symbol of the Poland's national identity.
