Copenhagen - The Little Mermaid | Den Lille Havfrue

The statue of The LIttle Mermaid that sits on a rock in Copenhagen's Langelinie Park is this city's most famous attraction. It was inspired by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale of the same name. The statue was created by Edward Eriksen in 1913, modelled after primaballerina Ellen Price. Since the mid 1960's, the Little Mermaid statue has been damaged and defaced, poured paint over, and even had its head cut off by pranksters twice. For this reason, the statue displayed in Copenhagen harbour has always been a copy, with the original kept at an undisclosed location by the sculptor's heirs.
