Helsinki - Uspenski Cathedral

Helsinki - Uspenski Cathedral

The Upsenski Cathedral is seen here from Kolera-allas or cholera basin, one of the docking piers for fishing boats near the Helsinki market square. It earned its name after an incident in 1893 when a fisherman succumbed to cholera during the autumn fish market days.

The Uspenski Cathedral is an Eastern Orthodox cathedral built in the Russian Byzantine style by architect Alexey Gornostaev and was constructed after his death in 1862-1868. The Cathedral is set upon a hillside on the Katajanokka peninsula overlooking the city. Uspenski Cathedral is claimed to be the largest orthodox church in Western Europe.
