Perast - Our Lady of the Rock
Our Lady of the Rock, or Gospa od Sÿkrpjela, is one of the two islets off the coast of Perast in Bay of Kotor, Montenegro. There's a local legend that says the islet was made by sailors over the centuries. After finding the icon of Madonna and Child on the rock in the sea on July 22, 1452, they all made a solemn oath to build an island. So they all threw a rock in the bay after they have returned from each successful voyage. Over time, these rocks have formed an island. The custom of throwing rocks into the sea is alive even to this date. Every year on the sunset of July 22, local residents celebrate an event called fasÿinada, where they take their boats and throw rocks into the sea.
