Burnham Overy Staithe lies on the North Norfolk coast between Holkham and Burnham Norton. 'Staithe' is an Old English word meaning 'landing place'. Overy Staithe is part of the parish of Burnham Overy, one of seven Burnham parishes. It is now a popular mooring for yachtsmen, but before the River Burn silted up, it was further up river that seagoing ships docked to unload.
