The Stari Most is the most important bridge of Mostar and it was named after the city - Mostar which means "bridge keeper." The bridge crosses Neretva river and connects the two banks at its narrowest point. It is a reconstruction of a 16th century Ottoman bridge which stood for 427 years until it was destroyed by artillery fire on November 9, 1993 during the Croat-Bosniak War. The bridge was attacked with tank fire and more than 60 shells hit the bridge before it collapsed. At the end of the war, UNESCO established an international committee of experts to oversee the design and reconstruction work. The bridge was rebuilt as close as possible to the original, using the same technology and materials. Army divers recovered stones from the original bridge from the river below while tenelia stones from local quarries were also used to complete the missing parts. The successfully rebuilt bridge opened on July 23, 2004.
