It stands on the eastern tip of Kungsholmen island and houses offices and conference rooms as well as ceremonial halls. It is the venue of the Nobel Prize banquet and one of Stockholm's major tourist attractions.

]]>Skeppsholmskyrkan is a church on the islet of Skeppsholmen built 1823-1849 to replace a minor wooden church on Blasieholmen destroyed in the fire of 1822. It was designed by Fredrik Blom as a neoclassical cathedral temple inspired by the Pantheon in Rome.The AF Chapman & Skeppsholmen Youth Hostel occupies a three-masted sailing ship that is permanently moored on Skeppsholmen, an island near the city center. The ship, which entered service as the Dunboyne in 1888, once carried passengers between Ireland and Australia. It was a Swedish Navy barracks ship during World War II and has been an STF youth hostel since 1949.

]]>The Central Bridge carries traffic from the old town in the north to the island of Sodermalm in the south. It measures 1,200 meters in length and consists of two viaducts passing over the southern and northern stream with an elevated section passing the Riddarholm canal and the eastern waterfront of Riddarholmen. Central Bridge has a capacity of 130,000 cars per day.

]]>Gamla Stan is the old town of Stockholm. The town dates back to the 13th century, and consists of medieval alleyways, cobbled streets, and archaic architecture. North German architecture has had a strong influence in the Old Town's construction.

Stortorget is the name of the scenic large square in the center of Gamla Stan, which is surrounded by old merchants' houses including the Stockholm Stock Exchange Building. The square was the site of the Stockholm Bloodbath, where Swedish noblemen were massacred by the Danish King Christian II in November, 1520. The following revolt and civil war led to the dissolution of the Kalmar Union and the subsequent election of King Gustav I.

As well as being home to the Stockholm Cathedral, the Nobel Museum, and the Riddarholm church, Gamla stan also boasts Kungliga slottet, Sweden's baroque Royal Palace, built in the 18th century after the previous palace Tre Kronor burned down. The House of Nobility (Riddarhuset) is on the north-western corner of Gamla stan.

]]>Skeppsholmsbron, was the first forging iron bridge to be constructed in Sweden in 1861. In 1935 this bridge on the island of Skeppsholmen was classified as a historical landmark, thus prohibiting replacing the bridge or changing its exterior, a decision nevertheless reassessed in the 1990's.

]]>Sergels Torg is the most central public square in Stockholm named after 18th century sculptor Johan Tobias Sergel, whose workshop was once located north of the square. Since its creation, Sergels Torg has been much criticized for giving priority to cars at the cost of pedestrians. It has, among some quarters, become the main target for criticism of the much debated demolition of the central city district of Klara during the 1950s and 1960s. Nevertheless, it is not dissimilar to but larger than the public space in front of Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and much like its French counterpart remains the most popular space in Stockholm for meeting friends, for political manifestations, for a wide range of events, and for drug-dealers. This includes the fountain, in which people celebrate every major victory by a Swedish sports team. Next to the square you can find the 37 meter tall glass obelisk made by Edvin Öhrström in 1974.

]]>Skeppsholmsbron, 165 metres long and 9.5 metres wide, consists of a 5.5 metre wide roadway flanked by 2 metre pathways, and is divided into 5 compartments. It was the first forging iron bridge to be constructed in Sweden, manufactured by Motala Verkstad in 1861.

The first bridge to connect Skeppsholmen to the rest of the city, was a wooden bridge on poles, simply called Holmbron ("The Islet Bridge") and provided with a drawbridge, constructed by the admiralty in 1638-1640 when the camp of the Swedish Navy was relocated from Blasieholmen to Skeppsholmen. In 1822 the bridge was severally damaged in a fire, and subsequently replaced by a temporary pontoon bridge. Funded directly and still owned by the state, the present steel bridge was finally inaugurated in 1861.

]]>The Royal Palace of Stockholm is His Majesty The King's official residence and is also the setting for most of the monarchy's official receptions. The palace is a daily place of work for The King and Queen as well as for the various departments that make up the Royal Court.

This combination of royal residence, workplace and culture-historical monument open year round to visitors makes the Royal Palace of Stockholm unique amongst Europe's royal residences.
The palace is built in baroque style by the architect Nicodemus Tessin and is formed as a Roman palace. The palace has more than 600 rooms divided between seven floors with a state apartment facing the city and smaller living rooms facing the inner courtyard.
